Mar 10, 2020 Vermont’s Scripps Spelling Bee final will be held Tuesday, March 17 at St. Michael’s College, One Winooski Park, Colchester. Competition begins at 3:30 p.m. Until the last word is spelled.
Preparation for spelling competitions is easier than ever with the new Word Club app created by the Scripps National Spelling Bee.Word Club is available to download for free on iPhone and Android devices and tablets. The initial app includes 50 study words.
Once students advance to more words, there are options for in-app purchases including all-access to the 4,000-word study list, Words of the Champions. The voice students will hear in the app is that of Dr. Jacques Bailly, pronouncer for the Bee. He recorded all 4,000 words along with alternate pronunciations for this project.
The app replaces the Bee’s online browser-based version of Word Club. The new Word Club has added features to keep students motivated to reach their spelling bee goals, whether they're aiming for a classroom championship or a trip to the national finals. Within the app, they can set targets for the amount of time spent studying or number of words mastered, and they also earn virtual 'bees' each time they spell or answer a question correctly. The bees make honey, and students who learn all 4,000 words can use that honey to fill a championship trophy to the brim while learning the words they need to succeed in spelling bees and in life.
While different regions have different plans, usually the winners oflocal spelling bees compete at another bee at a higherregional level. In fact, champions may compete severallevels before moving on to the finals which are held at the Grand HyattHotel inWashington, D.C. How Long Does It Take?Schools must enroll with the national office from mid-Augustthroughmid-October. Local spelling bees are held in the fall and winter. The final competition takes place the week after Memorial Day.In 2017, the final spelling bees will be held on June 1. This will be the 90th AnnualCompetition! Students in enrolled schools can receive listsof words to study fromScripps. Merriam-Webster also provides study helps. Of course, studentsmust study the spellings of words.
Butit isalso very helpful to learndefinitions, pronunciations, parts of speech andetymologies of words. That's a lot ofwork! Many students study straight from theThirdNew International Dictionary of the English Language, theofficial dictionary used byScripps. They also read good books tolearn new words. They often keep a special list of their owninterestingwords to memorize.
